Sando and Alex
Here you will find interesting information about our K-9 units.

Sando Akbar
Sando is currently the only working drug dog for Saline County Sheriff's Department. Sando is a five and a half year old German Shepherd orginally from Belgium. He was purchased with money aquired with the aid of a previous drug dog. Sando was first introduced to his handler, Bill Renken, on January 7, 1996. Sando trains approximately 4 times per week and is trained to find five major narcotics. Not only is he a beloved member of the Renken family, he is also a valuable member of the community. Most citizens do not realize the dangers this dog faces so that their children can have a safer school and that drug flow through Saline County might be reduced.

Alex
Alex was the first narcotic dog purchased by the Saline County Sheriff's Department. This 80 pound dog was half Labrador and half Chesapeake Bay Retriever. His coat was black with a little bit of white. The whole community pitched in to purchase Alex and pay for training for his handler. The Sheriff's Department raised money by holding bake sales, collecting pop cans, making and selling buttons, and collecting private donations. Alex was purchased in February 1990 and went into service in April 1990.

Throughout his lifetime, Alex found 2.25 million dollars in narcotics and money. This amount excludes money from selling vehicles forfeited in narcotics cases. Alex was trained to detect marijuana, hashish, cocaine, heroine, methamphetamine and a meth derivative called "ice".

Alex, Wally's partner, died December 9, 1996 from a massive stroke at the age of ten and a half. He is still greatly missed by Wally, the Sheriff's staff and the community.
